Each season here is unique and long-time guests often describe the magical quality of Hay Lake and Algonquin Park which once experienced, draws them back year after year. People who once visited as children now return as adults with a family of their own. First time visitors often comment that they wish they had been able to stay longer.
Algonquin is one of the worlds largest and most magnificent wilderness parks and part of Hay Lake lies within the park boundary. The lake ecosystem has a variety of natural features including rock cliffs, sandy shorelines, peat bogs and marshy wetlands, islands, creeks and waterfalls. As the seasons change the wildlife adjusts with some birds migrating to arrive in spring and leave in the fall, while others remain all year.
Our prime location 5 km / 3 miles from the nearest highway means the sounds you will hear most in spring, summer and fall are the loons calling and the waves lapping on the shore. In winter the silence is only broken by the wind and an occasional owl calling or sometimes wolves howling across the lake. The most unexpected surprises when guests arrive are the sound of silence and the fresh scents of the forest and lake.

The cabins and grounds are very well maintained and the privacy and proximity to such a clean lake is great. We never knew what wildlife will suddenly appear, either on the lake or in the surrounding forest. We have heard wolves howl across the lake, had moose, deer, foxes and loons close enough for great photos and we even spotted Sandhill cranes in the cranberry bog. We paddled from our cabin into the park and saw a variety of ducks and other water birds. Something special happened every day!

Hay Lake Cottages is 11 miles/17 kms south of Whitney, off Hwy. 127 on the McRae-Hay Lake Road. We are a 3-hour drive from Ottawa and 4 hours from Toronto.
